The organization of primary elections based on political party strengthens these nongovernmental organizations. In the U.S. this has resulted in the dominance of two political parties and the polarization of the electorate based on party affiliation. Direct democracy is better served by candidates appealing to voters based on their own qualifications and platforms, rather than on their party membership.
